Rice Judging Contest

2026 Ruben Stringer Memorial Texas Rice Education Contest
The contest will be held at Texas Rice Festival Museum ( 307 E Leblanc Rd Winnie Tx 77665 ) on Saturday, September 26, 2026, beginning at 10 am.

Please bring pencils, clipboards, and a non-programmable calculator. Scantrons(Horticulture) will be provided.

The top 2 high scoring individuals will receive belt buckles and the top 4 teams will receive banners. Schools can enter as many students as they want, as the top 4 students from each school will make up the team score. Students on smaller teams are eligible for high point awards. There is no entry fee however you must enter your team online just like the livestock entries. Awards will be presented at the arena along with Livestock Judging results on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

The exam will consist of identification, multiple choice and true/false questions. The list below details the sections from the Study Guide and types of questions from each section.
● Morphology and Development of the Rice Plant – identification (label diagram of rice plant), multiple choice and true/false from the vocabulary only
● Variety Information Table – identification (samples of long, medium and short grain rice) in conjunction with characteristics from Variety Information table
● Insect Pests of Rice – identification (samples in vials)
● Diseases of Rice – identification (samples of plants with disease)
● Weeds of Rice – identification (samples of plants)
● Red Rice – identification (sample of rough and hulled red rice)
● Stages of Processed Rice – identification (samples of rice from various milling stages)
● Rice Grain Quality – identification of grain quality issues (samples of affected rice grains), multiple choice and true/false
● Solved Word Problems – multiple choice
● Generalized Texas Rice Production Practices – multiple choice and true/false
● Useful Facts – multiple choice and true/false

Tips:
About 1/2 of the test will be identification (rice plant diagram, insects, weeds, diseases, milling stage, red rice, variety).
Be sure to indicate the life stage (larva, pupa, nymph, adult) of insects when appropriate.

Some figures from the “Useful Facts” section will be needed to solve word problems.
